Is it better to start dreadlocks with short hair or long hair?

Currently, my hair is down to my waist. Will it be extremely hard for my dreads to develop if I start out with such long hair? If so, how much effort is going to be required?

Also, if you have any additional good-to-know information about dreadlocks, please share! Is it better to start dreadlocks with short hair or long hair?
I know a LOT of people with dreads. They're VERY hard to keep up with and require constant attention. They itch and hurt and if you dread it and decide you don't like it you're going to have to shave your head. You can use special shampoos and conditioners to help the process. It's painful and itchy ... ALWAYS. It's okay to start dreading it with or without long hair. It's not JUST getting the dreads that is required. You also have to go trough a state of utter ugly horror. My friend, Liam, looked HORRIBLE with his dreads for about a year and decided to cut them off. Dreads are a BIG commitment. Is it better to start dreadlocks with short hair or long hair?
